Very weird: Zinc has become Firefox. Please read!
This is straight out of the Twilight Zone.
I use Zinc every day, and it's great. One evening, I turn it on and instead of the screen going black, the Zinc logo appearing, and that singing voice, I'm suddenly in Firefox. Except that it's called Zinc. It's Firefox, the whole UI with all the menus and everything, tabs, bookmarks, etc, except instead of saying Firefox in the top left menu, instead it says Zinc.
WTF?
So, I deleted every trace of Zinc off my computer (which, as far as I could tell, was only the application file), downloaded a new copy and reinstalled.
It's still Firefox.
OK, now here's a major clue to this riddle. When it first launched as Firefox, a strange dialog box appeared saying something I can't recall and giving me a few options, the default being something like "launch with all add-ons turned off". There was no option to just launch the application the way it normally does. The other options were more granular about disabling particular add-ons. It was all gobbeldy gook, so I hit default: no add-ons. Now it's Firefox.
Does that mean anything to any of you?
Thanks a lot for that. It created at least as many questions as it answered, but at least now I know I'm not crazy.
So, I get that Zinc and Firefox are similar in some ways and different in others. What that article doesn't say is that, really, Zinc isn't supposed to look anything like Firefox but rather is supposed to be this slick browser for video, containing links to loads of programming. And THAT is what I'm hoping to get back to.
I looked through the other faqs, but nothing explains how to get from where I am to where I want to be. If someone knows how, I'm in luck. Until then, I've gone back to using Boxee.
Seems like you're running in Safe Mode.

Yep, I agree, this definitely looks like Safe Mode. Trouble is, the only instructions I've found for getting out of Safe Mode apply only to Windows, whereas I am on a Mac. The only solution I've found to get Mac FF out of Safe Mode is to use TimeMachine to revert to a previous version.

I don't use TimeMachine on this Mac. I'm left to conclude, unbelievably, that I will never again be able to use Zinc on this machine.
How about reinstalling Zinc then using AppZapper to uninstall it?

Thanks, gonzo, AppZapper followed by a reinstall has managed to get it out of Safe Mode. Thanks!!!

the third one under troubleshooting --> What are the differences between Zinc's Windows application and Firefox extension?
Zinc can be installed as a windows application (called “Zinc standalone”) or as a firefox extension. Zinc standalone is based on Mozilla Firefox so many of the menus and options will be familiar to a Firefox user. However, Zinc standalone is not the same as Firefox and does not use the same locations on your computer to store information. You can install both Zinc Standalone and the Zinc extension on your computer. Here is a table of the differences between Zinc standalone and the Zinc extension.
