Killing my cable tv, questions on cleaning the crime scene
I'm going to be building an htpc within the next month to replace cable and consolidate all the media in the house. It'll hook into the livingroom hdtv.
I've been playing with various software on my computer (hulu, boxee, xbmc, wmc, zinc) for the last week or so and have settled on Zinc for the primary interface because it looks like the easiest interface for the rest of the house to use and, frankly, is a damn nice interface and looks like it will scale up wonderfully from my little 20" computer screen to the 50" plasma.
Basically, whatever I use has to be intuitive enough so my wife can pick up a remote and find some thing she wants to watch. She is NOT computer savvy by any means.
I also want to be able to supply whatever content (music and vid) I can to the rest of the house, but I realize that that's probably outside of Zinc's purvue.
And this brings a couple questions:
- Back button issue - It looks like content via hulu (and netflix according to a post here?) can't be gotten out of without escaping from full-screen -then- hitting backspace? Is there something a tad easier with a remote? Can't find much in the forums about this.
- Automatically adding new content of a favorite channel to the queue? It looks like the faves could eventually get pretty huge and scrolling through it to pick out and queue new shows could get to be rather a pain. Am I just missing a switch, or is this something worth persuing?
- Handling of local content.... uh..... er.... well.... kinda sucks. Granted it picked up all the avi's and mpg's (haven't worked with mkv's yet, tho I saw something about that in the forums here) it doesn't see or access the DVD back-ups I have (video_ts/audio_ts format) or even straight DVD playback?
I've been playing with the Applications to see if I can find an elegant solution to this (that my wife can use easily) and haven't really been able to figure something good out. Sure, I can swap out to VLC or something, but believe me, I'll only come home from work to a big screen covered in pop-ups and the wife trying to get off of a web page trying to sell her a virus scanner if I don't "spouse-proof" the set-up as much as possible. (or she'll have the media drive half-deleted, which is even worse. Married 20 years, I -know- these things...)
Anyways, local content access is important and I need to do something, if not within Zinc, then handing off to another program is fine (I guess... would love to see a "Local Content" bar on the main screen) but I'm not terribly impressed with how xbmc, wmc, or boxee handles it either. Any guidance here especially would be VERY appreciated!
Thanks much.
Zeevee makes the Zvbox which will distribute the audio and video coming from the PC running Zinc to the other TV's in the house over the existing coaxial cable. You don't need a set top box at each TV provided they have a builtin QAM tuner.
Thanks much for your replies! I'd like to stay away from dedicated type boxes for the time being, but I will keep that in mind down the road, grose.
I'm kind of at a disadvantage as I've been evaluating software on a vista machine and I gotta say that I'm not terribly impressed with VMC. Everything I read about 7MC, though, looks like I'll eventually want to integrate through that. For the time being, however, I'll run xbmc for the local media and Zinc for all the TV.
The only thing I'd keep on my wish list would be the ability to add new shows to the queue automatically (ala hulu). Perhaps a switch on each favorite show so you don't get spammed when a channel adds a couple seasons of old shows.
Anyways, thanks again! Looking forward to bringing Zinc to my big screen. Hopefully I'll be able to add to the community here over time.

TAD old thread, but, anyway...
1) Get an HTPC designated computer. Some Small Form Factor (mATX) like those old by Dell and HP that can be placed horizontally on the shelf. The problem with wife stuck on some webpage is one, and there is the problem with emails and work from home, and more viruses if you use it for browsing beyond Zinc and Boxee channels, and settings of "desktop" on your PC and other things.
2) You need a good remote control with mouse function - ZV or Gyration 4100us. ZV is probably better (I've opted for cheaper Gyration only because it's cheaper, no other reasons). Big green button on Gyr I programmed to turn ZV on.
3) I have yet to find a 10-ft interface like Zinc that works with all local files and does this well, with thumbnails. Right now with Win XP (no MCE) I have a shortcut named "My Videos" on the desktop for the folder with DVD rips and downloads. This is another benefit of HTPC-designated computer - you can keep very few icons on the desktop, and make fonts and icons large, for watching from the coach. Even without MCE it is easy and DVD movies can be thumbnailed.
4) Don't forget digital OTA (over the air) TV broadcasts. Usually one needs a decent outdoor antenna to get more than 3 or 4 channels. Channel Master 4221 is not terribly big for balcony or attic and it is good.
PS: Beware of those pages trying to "Sell" you anti-virus software. THIS IS A VIRUS. They infect you with a software that pops up the window (even when off-line) demanding you to buy, basically this is an extortion. I had this crap once, and only Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware was able to remove it.
How do I find out if the coaxial cable that was already in my house when i bought it - and is currently hooked up to my regular cable boxes- has the QAM tuner? Also, where can I find this ZvBox?? I've done a search on it for this site, and only find bulletins/blogs about it...?
Thanks,

You can find more information about the ZvBox at www.zeevee.com.
The TV is where the QAM tuner would live. If the TV can directly find the stations on cable then it likely has a QAM tuner. Place a cable splitter before the cable box with one output going to the cable box and the other directly into the TV to try it.

you will need to be running something else such as Windows Media Center to get local content - nice thing is WMC has a plug-in so you can launch Zinc from within it. WMC is a great front end.
www.thegreenbutton.com will become your friend for your endeavor.
I did the same thing as you about a month ago - unfortuantely I think you will find you will have to use multiple apps to get all the content you want - I use WMC, Zinc, Boxee mainly
