CBS.com no longer working?
CBS.com used to work just fine, but since their most recent player update, there are issues in watching through Zinc. For some reason, the loading screen shows fine, but then the player implodes (collapses on itself). Not sure if this is because Zinc is attempting an auto fullscreen or not (maybe I'll test with that option turned off).
Anyone else experiencing this? Running latest Zinc standalone on WinXP SP3.
I'm having the same problem as Sid. Using standalone on XP sp3.
I'm still having issues as well, but only intermittently (not every time). I had no issue watching HIMYM, but NCIS or CSI:NY seem to do it more often. Also, I've had it start watching and then stop on a commercial break.
I have confirmed that it's not the auto-fullscreen feature of Zinc, but I'm guessing it has something to do with commercials (as it happens at a commercial break, either at the beginning before the episode plays or partway through). Is Zinc trying to block commercials for CBS? Perhaps CBS has changed how they serve up the commercials and it's causing Zinc to break.
Any other suggestions or confirmation by others would be appreciated! :D
CBS has changed the way their site works for the new fall shows. We are in the process of trying adjust to the changes. We do not try to block commercials. I have not seen the issue you are describing, but suspect they may be experimenting with click to continue along with ads. Any help to characterize or isolate what the issue you are seeing would be appreciated.
okay, I played around with Firebug some last night and compared Zinc standalone with Firefox while watching NCIS or CSI:NY on cbs.com. What I could find was some $GET requests that came back unresponsive in Zinc standalone (no 404 or 302 or anything, just no response headers that would hang) that where not an issue in Firefox (received response headers from all, sometimes 302 headers and sometimes 200).
The first was the canplayer from cbs.com (unresponsive files were canplayer.swf, canplayer/config/release.xml, & canplayer/config/skin_default.xml). The second was the CBSI player on vidtech.cbs.com (unresponsive files were vidtech.cbs.com/crossdomain.xml, Conviva.swf, CBSI_PLAYER.swf, and CBSI_AdPlugin.swf).
Not sure if there's any better debugging tools to use than Firebug, but I can try any suggestions you have (I assume the Zinc debug log is for the main pages of Zinc only). I can also try to get better logs of the missing files (which are fine if I navigate directly to them in Zinc browser), but I was just checking quickly last night.
EDIT: I also just checked Zinc as a FF extension and it has the same issue as Zinc standalone when viewing the shows on cbs.com listed above. Once I remove the add-ons, it goes back to viewing just fine.
PS: I just installed the Windows 7 Enterprise RC trial on the same box I'm having issues on and the same thing happened within that OS environment as well. Anyone else having the same issues on Vista or 7?
Also, grose mentioned that CBS is experimenting with "click to continue" along with ads. I have noticed that CBS has started a new click ad structure sometimes that attempts to have you click between 2 or 3 different ads (letting you choose which one you watch). Is this what you are talking about?
I'm having a similar experience with CBS.
- Clicking on a CBS show link within Zinc, loads the show's video web page and the CBS video window within that page.
- The "circular arrow timer" animation then shows in the video window indicating the video is being queued.
- Within a few seconds the video window "collapses" and disappears.
- All of the other webpage elements, including video thumbnails remain.
I have a screenshot of what the page looks like minus the video viewing window, but I have no idea how to "attach" it to this comment.
Note: I can use FireFox or IE7 to goto & view that show page on CBS.com. Just can't use Zinc to view it.
I am having trouble with CBS in both Zinc and Firefox 3.6.12.
CBS works fine in IE8.
Was this fixed?

Works fine for me. I tested it by playing S6 E2 of How I met your Mother. However i'm using Windows 7 with the latest standalone version of Zinc.
